Unprofessionalism at its worstNever have I been so infuriated by a telephone conversation that ultimately ended with this agent hanging up on me mid-sentence. Not only is this sort of behavior unprofessional and rude, but it is childish as well. My fiancé and I have only recently begun to consider purchasing a home. We are both home owners currently and would have likely sold both of ours to purchase the home of our dreams. We took an evening drive yesterday and came across a home that interested us and decided to give the listing agent a call to arrange a showing. Instead of the listing agent, a colleague of hers answered the phone. I explained our situation and she promptly said that she would get back to us regarding a showing. When she called us back for the appointment she also said that in order to see the home, we would need to sign a buyer’s agent agreement with her. I have known this person all of 5 minutes and was not prepared to sign anything until I could at the least meet her in person. Further to this I told her that I wanted to potentially use the sales commission as leverage on the sales price. This apparently did not sit well with her. Her comment was “what do you care, the sellers pay the commission.” I then explained that I would like to have the ability to negotiate the commission percentage, as I know many agents that will refund a portion of the commission back to the client. Her next comment was, “Well, you’d have to work with an agent with little or no experience for that to happen.” She then told me that if I wanted to see the home, that I should contact the listing agent (which was her colleague), and as I began to ask her a question, she hung up on me. I have worked with numerous agents in the past all over the country, and not one was nearly as disrespectful and arrogant as this one. Regardless of the current housing market conditions, there is absolutely no reason to treat what was a potential client this way. It is that behavior that unfortunately mars the reputation of otherwise excellent realtors. What a shame.
